What Is NYSHIP Health Insurance? Does It Pay for Rehab?

What Is NYSHIP Health Insurance?

Admitting to yourself you are struggling with addiction and deciding to get sober is one of the most difficult but rewarding decisions that you can make for yourself. Addiction is a disease of isolation and going to rehab can help you to connect with others in a way that you may no longer know how to do. However, once you’ve decided to go to rehab, you might then be wondering if you can afford to go to rehab. If you’ve reached the point where going to rehab is necessary, you don’t want finances to prevent you from getting to your recovery. Still, you may not understand how to use your NYSHIP health insurance to go to rehab. At Laguna View Detox, we know how overwhelming the early days of sobriety can be. We will help you to understand what your benefits provide and work with your benefits carrier to facilitate your going to rehab and your aftercare programs.

What Is NYSHIP Health Insurance?

NYSHIP health insurance is the New York State Health Insurance Program that provides health insurance to New York state and local government employees. It is one of the largest public employer health insurance programs in the nation, with over one million lives covered. Established in 1957, NYSHIP was originally created to cover only employees of the state of New York. However, a short time later, the program was expanded to employees of local governments and school districts.  NYSHIP Health Insurance covers those who work with New York state and local governments serving others. The program is administered by the New York State Department of Civil Service. The plan covers active employees, retirees, and families.

Can I Use My NYSHIP Health Insurance to Pay for Rehab?

While every plan is slightly different, most NYSHIP health insurance plans do provide coverage for substance use care. Because there are different plans and different levels of care within rehab, we will work with you to see what is covered under your particular plan. Rehab can be done on an inpatient basis. It can also be done on an outpatient basis via a partial hospitalization program or an intensive outpatient program. Your treatment team will help you to determine which is the best level of treatment for you. NYSHIP plans offer coverage for the varying levels of treatment, but your plan summary will specify how much of your treatment will be covered. Most NYSHIP plans offer cover for inpatient services, structured outpatient care, aftercare, and more. Additionally, most NYSHIP plans provide coverage for inpatient psychiatric care which is important to note if you have a co-occurring mental health disorder. Insurance can be complicated and seem overwhelming, but we are here to help you navigate your benefits. We never want the difficulty of using your benefits to prevent you from doing the important work of getting sober.

The holidays can be stressful enough but when you have an addict in your life the stress levels can become almost unbearable at times. So many thoughts can complicate an already taxing time because there is no happy medium with addiction. You are damned if you do and damned if you don’t. Many wish that they could just make the addiction go away. Well, this is why many people choose the holidays as a time to stage an intervention. After all, is there a better gift?

Is This a Good Time?

The big question is, timing. Are the holidays a good time for an intervention? There are pros and cons to this but it can be a perfect way to build upon the momentum of the season and rally everyone together to address a longstanding problem with an addicted family member. This is also the time that family members who live far away do gather. What are your other choices? Will you allow this person to ruin another holiday?

It can be a tough decision but if you don’t use this time is there a chance that this person will ruin yet another holiday? Is that fair to the family? Confronting the problem head-on helps the addict get the treatment they need and grants family members the peace of mind to enjoy the holiday season. Plus, the holidays can be one of the most effective times to crack the initial stage of denial.

Lack of Focus

The holidays are also a time when the addict is least suspicious. They usually count on family being so engrossed in the holiday that they may go unnoticed. There is no doubt that an intervention gets the attention of any addict and when you get your point across there is an increasing the likelihood that the addict will accept the help being offered.

There is an increase in substance abuse and relapse during the holidays. From Thanksgiving Eve right through New Year’s Eve is often like one big party, Not only do people party more during these times and it is more acceptable but stress levels are increased and painful emotions can be exposed. This can be a dangerous time.

There is not a gift around that can be as useful as the gift of sobriety. Nothing should interfere with an intervention, regardless of the time of year. You owe you and your family a better holiday season so make this the year!
